The Ireland-based company, Botswana Diamonds, has rebranded as Botswana Minerals, to reflect a switch in focus to copper exploration. It used AI analysis developed to locate diamond deposits to target copper, delivering ‘excellent results’ and ‘identifying additional highly prospective diamond areas’.

The company said it recognises challenges faced by the global diamond sector including technological disruption and a cyclical downturn. While lab-grown diamonds are expected to dominate the lower end of the market, large, high quality natural diamonds which are rare are anticipated to remain in strong demand.

Through the use of the AI system, the company has identified 11 copper targets in Botswana. It has so far been granted eight licenses.

The company says it values copper’s strong long-term outlook, driven by its critical role in electrification and the global green energy transition. Botswana is rapidly emerging as a significant copper producer and remains an exploration-friendly jurisdiction.
