UK energy projects see hydrogen and solar rise
Hydrogen investment, largest solar site and non-pipeline carbon capture.
A hydrogen project using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen is expected to deliver over 400 new UK jobs in South Yorkshire.
ITM Power UK Ltd has been given a £40mln investment from Great British Energy, the UK’s publicly owned energy company, alongside a £46.5mln government grant in principle, to deliver expansion of hydrogen technology manufacturing in the UK.
The ITM factory manufactures electrolysers required to generate green hydrogen. This investment is intended to accelerate the delivery of ITM’s next-generation electrolyser technology, known as Chronos.
Meanwhile the UK Government has approved the 800MW Springwell Solar Farm, Lincolnshire, which is set to become the largest solar power project in the country by generation capacity. It is due to begin exporting electricity to the grid in 2029.
In addition, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has launched the Non-Pipeline Transport Pathfinder, previously announced alongside the East Coast Cluster Teesside Selection Process. It enables CO₂ transport by road, rail and sea to connect carbon capture, usage and storage projects to the East Coast Cluster by 2032.
