RecyClass, an initiative to bring transparency to the origin of plastic waste, has released an updated version of its Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for Labels & Adhesives applied on PET bottles.

This follows work carried out by the RecyClass PET Technical Committee that brought together experts from across the packaging value chain, including label and adhesive manufacturers, recyclers, and converters.

Chairman of RecyClass, Paolo Glerean, says, ‘The enhancements made to this protocol enable a more precise and consistent evaluation of how labels and adhesives perform throughout the recycling process.'

The revised success criteria focuses on effective separation of labels from PET bottles, ensuring adhesive residues remain stuck to labels and verifying that PET flakes don’t degrade after oven tests.

More than seven adhesive technologies were approved after testing in RecyClass Recognised Testing Facilities.

Companies can find the relevant approval letters and Design for Recycling guidelines on the RecyClass website.
