It is hoped the scheme will help meet the skills needs of Agratas' gigafactory that is under construction in Somerset.

The gigafactory is expected to deliver around 4,000 jobs and contribute more than £700mln annually to the South West of England.

This comes as SSE announces that its Ferrybridge Battery Energy Storage System in West Yorkshire is now fully operational.

The 150MW/300MWh project benefits from its location on the site of the former 2GW Ferrybridge power station, which was decommissioned in 2016. The newly commissioned battery storage system is designed to store electricity and release it back to the grid when demand is highest.

SSE claims that the system can operate for up to two hours at full output and is capable of meeting the equivalent peak electricity demand of almost quarter of a million homes.
