Welcoming the new Chair of EMM3

Dr Norman Keane FIMMM was elected Chair of the Ethnic Minorities in Materials, Minerals & Mining (EMM3) group.

IOM3 is pleased to announce Dr Norman Keane FIMMM as the new Chair of the Ethnic Minorities in Materials, Minerals & Mining (EMM3) group.

Norman is Managing Director of Keane Scientific Consulting and brings extensive experience from a career in industrial R&D across a wide range of polymer materials, their chemistries and applications, including work in the mining sector. His career has taken him internationally, with roles in Belgium, Malaysia and the USA. Norman currently chairs the Industry Advisory Board of the Sustainable Chemicals and Materials Manufacturing Hub (SCHEMA) and is a visiting researcher at the University of Strathclyde.

In his role as Chair, Norman aims to encourage greater ethnic minority participation across IOM3 activities through an active and engaged EMM3 community. He also intends to support broader representation within IOM3 leadership and governance, highlighting how voluntary roles can contribute to career and professional development. Alongside this, he plans to promote IOM3 membership both in the UK and internationally, while engaging with schools and universities to listen to emerging voices and inspire the next generation to consider STEM careers. Norman is also committed to collaborating with other membership organisations in business and academia to share best practice and learn from ongoing work around EDI and ethnic minority concerns.

In outlining his priorities for the role, Norman says, 'As Chair of EMM3, I want to assist IOM3 in being an organisation that ethnic minorities want to belong to, can benefit from professionally through engagement, and that IOM3 sets a positive example to other STEM professional bodies in ensuring that the inequalities that exist in industry and academia are being addressed. At a time when EDI initiatives are under pressure, I want to ensure that what remains of EDI continues to address the needs and concerns of ethnic minority people.'

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Norman Keane FIMMM.
