Policy briefing proposes ceramics boost

A perspective on the British ceramics industry from GMB, Trades Union Congress and Green Alliance.

The briefing notes the importance of ceramics to modern industry, where advanced refractories line steel and glass furnaces; precision components enable energy generation, defence systems and medical devices.

Electrification of the sector is seen as the main priority according to the document, which gives examples of international success. Hydrogen use and carbon capture are also highlighted.

Material innovations and reformulation are seen as being beneficial, although recognised as not being commercially proven.

The briefing calls for the UK Government to establish mechanisms such as the Decarbonisation Innovation Fund, reforming procurement to reward UK value creation, and creating a dedicated Business Transition Hub for SMEs to help ceramics manufacturers modernise.
