IOM3 Fellow appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State

Chris McDonald MP FREng CEng FIMMM is the new Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in DBT and DESNZ.

We're pleased to share that one of our Fellows, Chris McDonald MP FREng CEng FIMMM, has been appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

Chris has been an MP for Stockton North since July 2024. Prior to that, he was the CEO of the Materials Processing Institute, a research organisation with a deep expertise in steel and other materials.

Dr Church CEnv FIMMM, IOM3 CEO, said, 'It is fantastic to see someone with such substantial experience of running a materials science and engineering business appointed as a minister. There are many important Government decisions coming over the next few months – including some key strategies on steel, critical materials and circular economy – so having his knowledge and expertise in such a key role will be hugely valuable. We look forward to working with him in his new post.'

The Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining has a wide range of policy activities involving our network of academic and industrial professionals in several industries, including materials sciences, engineering, business, trade, circular economy and energy. If you're interested in contributing to the Institute as someone with experience in these fields, please reach out to our Policy team.
