IOM3 Fellow appointed Board Chair of Global Tailings Management Institute
Mark Cutifani CBE FREng FIMMM has recently been appointed Chair of the GTMI Board.
The Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI) works to establish and enhance the safety of mine tailings facilities by promoting widespread adoption and implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). It is founded by ICMM, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI).
Recently, GTMI announced a multi-stakeholder board of directors with Mark Cutifani CBE FREng FIMMM, former CEO of Anglo American, at the helm, bringing with him decades of mining experience and responsible tailings management. Mark Cutifani is a mining engineer who began his career in deep underground coal mining in Australia. In his five decades of experience, he has had line and support responsibilities across all forms of mining, processing, and product marketing, having worked across six continents, 20 countries and with more than 30 minerals and metals.
On his appointment, Mark says, 'The Institute is a key part of the global infrastructure to ensure we can achieve zero harm to people and the environment from tailings waste. It is a unique collaboration, focused on aligning standards and supporting each other to create a safer and more socially sensitive mining industry. Taking past lessons and developing new and innovative approaches is at the core of how we come together to continuously improve our approach to mine waste and tailings solutions.'
