© Ministry of Mining, ChileThe President of the Chilean Republic, Gabriel Boric, presented the National Strategy for Critical Minerals (EMC) to prepare Chile for the challenges and opportunities arising from the accelerated increase in global demand for minerals for the energy transition.
The strategy aims to consolidate the country's mining leadership, diversify its economy, attract responsible investments and strengthen productive chains, under the principles of environmental sustainability, territorial justice and respect for human rights.
The President indicated, ‘With this strategy, a roadmap is drawn up that will allow Chile to consolidate its role in global mining supply chains, through coordinated and gradual public action that favours competitiveness, the development of value chains and the resilience of the industry, promoting productive development with modern mining, responsible and oriented to the well-being of the country and its communities.’
The Minister of Mining, Aurora Williams, says, ‘14 minerals have been identified that are feasible for our country to develop, as well as the variables necessary to carry out this strategy. development of communities, environmental balances and the training of human talent required to meet the global demand for critical minerals.’
The document is the result of a broad participatory process including a High-Level Consultative Committee, a technical committee with more than 120 specialists, regional workshops and a citizen consultation at the national level.
The National Strategy for Critical Minerals is structured in five pillars:
- Production and diversification
- Responsible mining
- Opportunities for development and value addition
- International insertion and diplomacy of minerals
- Enabling capacities
