Report describes strategies for reducing plastic waste in Indonesia
Output of four-year programme provides evidence-based approaches.
The report, Evidence-based Strategies for Reducing Plastic Waste in Indonesia, emerges from the Plastics in Indonesian Societies (PISCES) programme, funded by UK Research and Innovation’s Global Challenges Research Fund.
It presents 26 policy recommendations to inform Indonesia’s forthcoming National Plan of Action, expected to launch in 2026, following the current 2018–2025 plan.
Key recommendations in the report, which involved Brunel University, UK, researchers, include:
- Prohibiting open burning at dump sites.
- Strengthening waste services, integrating the informal sector.
- Scaling up reuse systems.
- Embedding behaviour change campaigns using trusted local leaders.
- Active stakeholder collaboration and policy interventions, including enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance and capacity building in waste management.
- Establishing a national monitoring and risk management framework to enhance the flexibility and accountability of Indonesia’s policy over time.
