IOM3 launches new classroom resources to support energy transition education

New classroom resources on the energy transition, available to members and School Affiliate subscribers.

We've launched a new suite of classroom ready resources to support teaching on materials, minerals and mining for the energy transition.

Developed following our secondary school STEM teachers’ conference at M3P3 last November, the resources were created collaboratively by our Energy Transition Group and Education & Outreach Team. They are designed to strengthen subject knowledge and help bring the energy transition to life for students.

The suite includes seven posters and detailed teacher notes covering energy from wind, the sun, water, waste, hydrogen, nuclear power and fossil fuels. The materials also introduce key enabling technologies such as gas turbines and carbon capture, highlighting the essential role of materials, minerals and mining in developing and deploying these solutions.

The resources are now available to logged in IOM3 members and School Affiliate subscribers, and we encourage members to share them with teachers and students to support wider understanding of the energy transition and its links to materials, minerals and mining.

Dr Diane Aston, Head of Education & Professional Development said ‘I am really proud of the resources we have created to improve teachers’ subject knowledge in relation to the energy transition and the key role materials, minerals and mining play in developing key technologies.  We hope that schools will be able to use these to enrich and enhance their teaching and raise the attainment and aspirations of the young people they work with.’

Henry Oughton, member of the IOM3 Energy Transition Group Leadership Team added ‘I am extremely grateful to the subject matter experts who invested their time in creating these excellent resources that will continue to support both teachers and students for years to come. A call to all IOM3 members: please share these resources with any teachers (or indeed students) who may have an interest in the energy transition (which should be all of us!)’

We thank the Energy Transition Group volunteers for their time and expertise in delivering the M3P3 education activities and help in developing these resources. You can read more about the Education and Outreach activity at M3P3 below.
