The United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory and the Henry Royce Institute want to steer critical policy and investment decisions about fission materials research, development and innovation.

In May, 21 specialists across different sectors identified key material themes and challenges that will underpin future workshops.

Additional subject matter experts are being sought for their contributions.

Future sessions fall under the following themes:

  • Structural materials
  • Fuels and cladding
  • Irradiation damage
  • Disposability
  • Cross-cutting themes, including skills, qualifications, policy and more

The partners say the UK Fission Materials Roadmap will provide a coherent approach to R&D and will be shared with key stakeholders, including government and funding organisations, potentially influencing decisions.

Scheduled for publication in summer 2026, the final roadmap aims to inform action and timescales, identify collaborative opportunities and inspire activity and investment.

Subject matter experts can register their details via the UKNNL.
