Dr Rich Laver
Senior Technical Manager & AI Team Lead, Maxwell Geosystems Ltd.
Dr Rich Laver began his career with a multidisciplinary foundation, earning a first-class degree in Engineering from the University of Cambridge, complemented by early professional experience with the Ministry of Defence. His academic pursuits culminated in a PhD focused on interpreting tunnel conditions through advanced numerical modelling, laying the groundwork for his expertise in geotechnical innovation.
With 15 years of experience in Hong Kong as a geotechnical engineer, Dr Laver joined GCG Asia, applying advanced analytical methods to optimize geotechnical solutions. As an I&M engineer at the West Kowloon Terminus, he developed innovative software applications to transform complex data into actionable insights, streamlining data management processes. These applications delivered significant value across multiple MTR sites and the Third Runway System. Drawing on his expertise in Distributed Fibre Optic Strain Sensing (DFOSS), Dr Laver designed a number of cutting-edge DFOSS installations on geotechnical assets.
Over the last 10 years, Dr Laver mastered full-stack development, creating in-house digital twins and computational applications. Three years ago, he joined Varadise, collaborating with professional developers to drive digital transformation in geotechnical engineering as a product designer. Currently, as the AI lead at Maxwell Geosystems, Dr Laver has formulated the company’s AI business strategy and established its AI team. He has prototyped a RAG chatbot, serving as the end-to-end product designer and primary implementor, with the system now in production deployment.
Dr Laver’s unique blend of geotechnical expertise, AI innovation, and digital development positions him as a leading voice in leveraging artificial intelligence to advance geotechnical engineering solutions.
