The next IOM3EG Afternoon Technical Discussion Meeting (ATDM) in 2026 is on the topic of Elastomers in Transportation Sector. The area of transportation is vast, and the aim is to attract a broad set of speakers from different transportation areas in order tounderstand more how elastomers are used in each area. This could include buses, trams, trains and aviation, and electric vehicles.

This afternoon technical discussion meeting will examine the different requirements and challenges from such applications as suspension systems, as well as design of rubber components within different types of vehicles.

Key takeaways:

  1. Find out the current trends of elastomers used in transportation, particularly in electrical vehicles
  2. Technical solutions to current problems faced by the transportation industry
  3. Connect with the key stakeholders and companies in the rubber industry

Patrick Zenker: Innovating Anti‑Vibration Technologies for Tomorrow’s Transport

Trelleborg AVS, a global leader in anti‑vibration solutions, presents how vibration challenges are evolving across the transport sector. Using rail applications as an example, the talk introduces ConeX3 as a smart solution enabling condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of elastomer systems.

Thao Pham: Tyre Wear Challenges in Electric Vehicles

The electrification of the transport industry introduces new challenges for tyre performance. Tyres designed for electrical vehicles (EVs) must meet higher demands due to increased vehicle weight from the batteries and the ability of EVs to deliver torque instantaneously. These factors result in greater stresses at the tyre road interface, leading to accelerated tread wear. To maximise vehicle range, EV tyres are optimized for lower rolling resistance, which, however conflicts with the requirement for high wet grip performance. This work explores how to develop an optimal balance between tyre longevity, fuel efficiency and enhanced safety.
