Low carbon concretes- an overview
- Cement manufacture is responsible for around 7-8% of global CO2 emissions with significant growth anticipated.
- Beyond enhancing efficiencies in conventional cement manufacturing and design, a further option is to move towards cements with different compositions and inherently lower embodied carbon.
- This presentation will overview these materials and some of the challenges to their widespread adoption, with examples.
Dr Antonios Kanellopoulos
Associate Professor - Director of the Centre for Engineering Research, University of Hertfordshire – School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science
Zero Waste Strength - Upcycling Industrial Mineral Byproducts for Sustainable Built Environment
- This talk will showcase the global issue of mineral waste streams and their potential to be upcycled towards circular and sustainable solutions for the built environment.
Dr Fragkoulis Kanavaris
Global Lead – Concrete Materials and Decarbonisation, Arup
Apostolos Tsoumelekas
Materials Engineering Manager, Skanska UK
Calcined clays for sustainable infrastructure: Material insights and case study from a major infrastructure project
- This talk will cover the principal characteristics of calcined clays for use as sustainable cement replacement materials in concrete and present developments from an innovative initiative in the UK where waste clay is reused as calcined clay in concrete in an infrastructure megaproject.
