Earth’s ability to store carbon set to reach capacity

Around 1,460GT of carbon dioxide can be safely stored underground, but this could be reached by 2200.

According to a paper in Nature by Mohana Basu, the planet’s capacity to store carbon-dioxide emissions in rock formations is much smaller than previous estimates suggest, and it could run out as early as 2200.

The paper reads, 'Treating carbon storage as a limited intergenerational resource has deep implications for national mitigation strategies and policy and requires making explicit decisions on priorities for storage use'.
