Executive summary:

The Indian steel industry stands at a pivotal juncture, poised to become a global leader in sustainable steel production over the next decade. This talk outlines the strategic roadmap for 2025–2035, focusing on capacity expansion, technological innovation, and sustainability stewardship. It examines the current status of the sector, projected growth to 300 million tonnes by 2030, and policy frameworks such as the National Steel Policy and PLI (Performance Linked Incentives) Scheme that will drive transformation.

Key challenges, including raw material security, global competition, and decarbonization are analyzed alongside emerging opportunities from infrastructure development and export potential. The roadmap emphasizes sustainability targets, including a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and alignment with India’s net-zero commitment by 2070. Initiatives like Green Steel Mission, hydrogen-based DRI, and circular economy practices are highlighted as critical enablers.

Through strategic investments, workforce development, and adoption of advanced technologies, India aims to strengthen its global positioning while ensuring environmental responsibility. This talk provides actionable insights for stakeholders to collaborate in shaping a resilient, competitive, and green steel ecosystem for the future.
