A Talk by Dr Rhian Jones, CEng FIMechE FIGEM
This talk explores the challenges of repurposing methane infrastructure, some over 50 years old, for hydrogen transport. We'll look at the history of the UK gas network, the materials originally used, and how hydrogen’s unique properties introduce risks such as embrittlement, leakage, and reduced durability. With hydrogen playing a key role in decarbonisation, testing facilities like FutureGrid are helping assess whether legacy assets can safely support this transition. Join us to explore how materials science is at the heart of solving one of the energy sector’s biggest retrofit challenges.
