Sherbourne Recycling operates the UK’s most advanced Materials Recycling Facility, and has a partnership with eight local authorities to make up the company structure and ownership. The partnership was created to give councils greater control over how household recycling is processed, helping to stabilise costs and adapt more easily to changing legislation. The facility began processing waste in August 2023 and became fully operational in April 2024. Its impact is already clear—DEFRA’s 2023/24 results placed four partner councils among the top 20 most improved recycling rates nationally, with a fifth ranking third overall. Thanks to its cutting-edge technology, Sherbourne Recycling can handle a wider range of materials than most facilities, including plastic bags, wrapping, and cartons, all through fully commingled collections.
