This talk explores the urgent responsibility surrounding critical minerals in the context of global energy transition. As nations accelerate their shift towards renewables and
electrification, demand for minerals like lithium, cobalt, and rare earths is surging. The talk will examine how mineral supply chains shape technical, social, environmental, economic, and governance outcomes, focusing on the consequences of expansion into new frontiers, permitting, and ESG challenges.
Drawing on insights from recent research on biodiversity loss and social conflict, the session highlights the need for integrated approaches-from technical innovation and circular economy strategies to building social license and policy harmonization. By mapping out risks, opportunities, and stakeholder impacts, we can gain a systemic perspective on how responsible practices in critical minerals mining and processing can unlock sustainable value for people and planet, while safeguarding supply security for the future.
Lucy has a wealth of experience as a geologist and sustainability consultant, with a long-standing commitment to driving positive change across the mining industry.
