The course in Grantham will take place on 13 May 2026.
We are delighted to be working with Steve Parry and Nick Koor to create this one-day course.
Ground modelling is a critical step in understanding subsurface conditions, whether for mining, civil engineering, environmental assessment, or infrastructure development. This course provides participants with a practical and conceptual introduction to the principles, data, and workflows used to build reliable ground models.
Over the day, delegates will explore how geological and geotechnical data are collected, interpreted, and transformed into a cohesive 3D representation of the subsurface. We also cover uncertainty, validation, and applications of ground models in decision-making across sectors.
After this course, you will be able to:
-
Understand the basic 10 steps to develop an engineering geological models (EGM) through synthesis/interpretation of a knowledge framework based on available information.
-
Understand the difference between various types of model; especially a conceptual model and an observational model.
-
Use the EGM knowledge framework to understand project risks.
-
Follow the presentation of the EGM through maps, sections, tabulated information and 3D visualisations.
-
Use the EGM to gain a preliminary understanding of geotechnical engineering issues that might affect a reservoir, pipeline and treatment plant in an area containing active landslide, karst and mine workings
-
Use of maps, sections, risk registers and visualisations to communicate the EGM implications to a variety of parties.
The course is aimed at early-career geologists, geotechnical and mining engineers, as well as environmental and sustainability practitioners who work with subsurface information. It is also suitable for those involved in planning, regulation, or policy where ground conditions influence decision-making. The course provides a clear and accessible foundation for professionals from other sectors who wish to gain a practical understanding of ground modelling and its relevance to engineering and environmental projects.
