We're delighted to be working with Cornish Lithium on the inaugural Mining Masterclass, a FREE, two-day, residential course for 11-19 teachers on 26 & 27 June 2026.
The Mining Masterclass with give you first-hand experience of the mining industry in action. It features a careful blend of lectures, practical sessions, company tours, and discussion opportunities with experts.
Almost all the things we touch every day are made from materials that came from natural resources extracted from the ground - the adage that if you can't grow it, you have to mine it is still very true! The materials that drove technological advances across the centuries had to come from somewhere, and mining continues to play a vital role in current developments. Our transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient efficient and resilient society requires new materials and will not be possible without responsible mining. Sadly, this is not always presented most positively. The Mining Masterclass allows us to redress this balance and present a more positive view of the mining industry and its importance in reaching net-zero, whilst addressing the key issues around its impact on the environment.
Who can attend the Mining Masterclass?
The Mining Masterclass is open to practicing and trainee STEM teachers and the programme is particularly relevant to the science, design technology, engineering, georgraphy, and geology curricula. Teachers from all regions of the UK are welcome, though 5 of the 15 spaces have been reserved for local teachers. The residential aspect provides the ideal opportunity to network with other like-minded teachers from across the country and we hope that you will make long lasting connections with your colleagues and the invited speakers.
The sessions are all delivered by experts from industry and academia and the Masterclass includes a crucial final session looking at how you can use the content from the course in your classroom teaching.
Where will the course be taking place?
On Friday morning you should make your way to the Cornish Litium site where we will be based for both days.
Cornish Lithium
Trelavour Processing Site, St Austell, Cornwall, PL26 8DY
You can find out more about the company at https://cornishlithium.com.
After the formal sessions have concluded we will move across to the hotel where we have arranged dinner, bed and breakfast accommodation. If you are feeling really keen you might want to bring your swimming costume or gym kit as you will have use of the hotel’s leisure facilities.
The Cornwall Hotel & Spa, St Austell
Pentewan Road, St Austell, Cornwall, PL26 7AB
You can find out more about the hotel at https://www.thecornwall.com.
If you are travelling by public transport we will store your bags securely throughout the day.
Are you able to help with the costs of attending?
Through sponsorship we are able to offer all delegates a contribution of up to £250 towards cover or transport costs. You may also use this to contribute to your accommodation costs if you are staying over on Thursday night. Details of how to claim this will be handed out on the course.
What about travel arrangements
We have tried to make it as easy as possible for you to get to and from the course using public transport. The Cornish Lithium site is about 8 miles from St Austell railway station. For those travelling by public transport we will arrange your transfer from the site back to the station once the course has finished.
If you would prefer to travel by car, the hotel and company have car parking available, though we accept no responsibility for any loss, theft or damage to your vehicle or its contents during the course.
What do I need to bring?
The first and possibly most important things are a sense of humour and curiosity! We want you to have a good time on the course so please come with an open mind and be prepared to get involved. The opportunity to meet and chat with fellow teachers from around the country is often cited as one of the most valuable aspects of the course.
With regards to your attire we want you to be comfy but sensible! The presentations will be in a conference room but we will also be doing practical work and taking a tour of the comany site. We recommend enclosed sensible shoes on both days. Other safety clothing such as high-vis jackets, safety footwear, spectacles or lab coats will be provided when they are needed.
What if I can no longer attend?
We hope that all that register to attend the Mining Masterclass can attend. If you find you are no longer able to attend the course please let us know as soon as you can - details of how to do this are provided in the Joining Instructions you will receive once you have registered.
Many aspects of the course need to be paid for well in advance so unless we can find another teacher to fill your space, the following cancellation policy will apply.
- Cancellations more than 4 weeks ahead of the course will not incur a cancellation charge.
- Cancellations between 2 and 4 weeks from the start of the course will incur a cancellation charge of £100.
- Cancellations less than 2 weeks from the start date of the course will incur a cancellation charge of £200.
- Failure to turn up on the course will incur a cancellation charge of £400.
- Substitutions are permitted and registrations may be amended. If this is the case, there will be no cancellation fee. If no substitute can be found the relevant cancellation fee will be applied.
In registering for the course you are agreeing to these cancellation terms.
Where's the catch? How can you make such a fantastic course free?
The Mining Masterclass costs around £650 per delegate to put on but this is entirely funded through sponsorship from the mining industry. There is a shortage of qualified people working at all levels in mining, minerals processing, and geosciences. We want you to have an amazing time finding out about mining so that you can go away and pass on your enthusiasm to the young people that you teach.
