SUMMARY:Stirring things up: Techniques for increasing the productivity of friction spot welding
DESCRIPTION:Refill Friction Stir Spot welding (RFSSW) is an exciting emerging joining technology that could rival conventional techniques such as rivets and fusion spot welds. Derived from the widely known friction stir welding process, RFSSW offers many advantages over other spot joining processes, including low heat input, low thermal distortion, no need for filler material, reduced energy costs, and the ability to weld dissimilar metals and alloys. Although well-established in research, RFSSW is held back from industrial adoption by one key factor; it is too slow, with a typical RFSSW joint requiring x3 longer than competitor technologies. This talk will give a broad introduction to RFSSW and discuss some of the research undertaken to address this important process challenge, including experimental welding tool geometries and finite element simulation of the welding process.
